Organizations that espouse a more regional focus through collaborative action seem to get increased recognition these days, if one looks at the recipient of a recent 2005 Community Development Achievement Award: the Action Southwest Business Networks Coalition (ASBNC) based in Swift Current.

The Saskatchewan Council for Community Development (SCCD) awards the honour every year. Linda Pipke is Executive Director of the SCCD.
"The ASBNC is a pilot project initiated by a broad range of leaders representing urban and rural municipalities, private and public sector businesses, federal and provincial government departments, business development organizations and educational institutions from across the southwest region of Saskatchewan.

"The Coalition works to support the formation of strategic alliances among small and medium sized businesses and to foster a climate in which these networks can grow and flourish. These people believe in the potential of their communities and have worked collaboratively to encourage their involvement in shaping the future of their region."

According to Pipke, the recipients of this award developed a broad-based, regional initiative that successfully stimulated various sectors of the local economy.

"Representatives of business, government, crown corporations, education and community organizations have come together for this regional initiative, developing industry clusters and strategic alliances that will have long-lasting effects on building the regional economy."

True to form, the ASBNC has facilitated the establishment of four business networks that are, in effect, strategic alliances involving the four key industry sectors of the region this year: agribusiness, energy, manufacturing, and tourism.

"The ASBNC was initiated in November 2004. All the partners have agreed it was time for a new way of thinking and acting, and that together they could shape the region's next steps in development, regardless of where they were based in the region.

"This initiative is intended to change how the people of the Southwest see their region and enables them to work together to ensure that this region secures a dynamic sustainable economy."

The ASBNC is a bottom-up, collaborative strategy with a mission to grow Southwest Saskatchewan.

The Saskatchewan Council for Community Development (SCCD) recognizes each year individuals and organizations throughout the province that have made a difference in their community with the Community Development Achievement Award.

"This recognition is awarded to those who believe in Saskatchewan; to those who strive for continual improvement in their community by building and strengthening individuals and organizations who will in turn contribute to a community's long-term success."

To achieve sustainable prosperity, new ways of thinking and action are indeed called for. New investments and new ways of cooperating are required.

"As the development of this initiative has clearly shown," concludes Pipke, "the people of the Southwest care deeply about their region and are willing to move forward together."
